A love, compassion and understanding of the Special Needs Community came from an early start for Bryar, through the love of a family member that was born with Cerebral Palsy. Her desire to be a part of that community grew and through high school she volunteered her time to teach children with special needs swimming lessons.
Later in life her true calling came when her son was born with Down Syndrome. Her desire and drive intensified to give her child the best life possible. Becoming an advocate for her son and also for the Down Syndrome Community she formed a Mommy and Me Group for Mothers with newborns with Down Syndrome. Bryar worked with the San Diego Regional Center to have a monthly education forum at her home where the moms not only got guidance for parenting a child with special needs but where they were able to speak freely and forge bonds with each other. Seventeen years later most of these moms and now young adults remain a part of each other’s lives.
Her deep love and desire to pave the way for her child inspired her to write a children’s book called A Special Bug Indeed, about a bug with Special Needs that wants to fit in. The goal of the book was to educate typical peers on inclusion. Bryar has been involved in multiple school programs for Ability Awareness, sharing her book with the students and candidly answering all their questions.
Bryar is also heavily involved in a non-profit special needs hockey team that has been building and growing over the last 4 years. This team has not only helped to form incredible bonds and team building, but also encourages physical exercise, teaches the art of hockey and gives its players a fun activity to look forward to each week with their friends.
Bryar’s journey continues as she prepares for what her young adult sons future looks like. Her desire to foster his dream and others like him of independent living is the force behind this new venture. With the needs, desires and hopes in mind of its residents she intends to create a safe living environment that will embrace growth, and provide a sense of community to its members. She believes in creating a unique space that will not only inspire everyday living, but promote responsibility, community participation and a quality of living, while maintaining a safe environment for its members.
Her inspiration and understanding of the special needs community will aid in the resurrection of this very special community that aspires to help many individuals to live their very best life.
